It boasts stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and a fascinating museum that focuses on the history of the castle and the surrounding area.

Make sure that you don’t miss out on the daily falconry displays when you visit the castle – it provides an exciting opportunity to witness these magnificent birds in action.

Dunrobin Castle is a family-friendly and affordable day out, with adult admission set at £14 and family tickets (2 adults and 3 children) available for £42.

Find out more at: http://www.dunrobincastle.co.uk/

Culloden Battlefield

For anyone interested in history, your Highland holiday wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Culloden Battlefield.

Culloden was the location of the last pitched battle in Great Britain and the final battle of the Jacobite rising in 1746. If you choose to visit the battlefield, you’re able to walk along the battle lines and view the resting place of the fallen soldiers, which can be incredibly moving.

There’s also a museum on-site which takes visitors through the journey of the Jacobite rising – it has the perfect combination of ancient relics and modern technology, creating an experience that is perfect for visitors of all ages.

Culloden Battlefield is a little further away from our Highland holiday cottages than some of the other locations on this list, but it’s a must for any visitors that have an appreciation of history.

Find out more at: https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/culloden

Ben Bhraggie

Walking up Ben Bhraggie near the village of Golspie is a must for anyone on a Highlands holiday.

This beautiful hill offers a challenging but rewarding hike. Once you reach the top, you’ll be able to appreciate incredible views of the surrounding landscape – on a clear day; you’re even able to see both coastlines of Scotland.

For those with an interest in Scottish history, at the top of the hill, there’s also a famous (if slightly controversial) 100-foot statue of the first Duke of Sutherland, George Granville Leveson-Gower.

Erected in 1834 and also known as “The Mannie”, the statue commemorates the life of the Duke, who made great strides in road building and transport but was also responsible for the Highland Clearances – a large-scale eviction of people from their homes across the Highlands.

Find out more: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/sutherland/ben-bhraggie.shtml

The Bone Caves of Inchnadamph

If you feel like getting active during your Highlands holiday and want to explore some of Scotland’s natural history, consider a trip to The Bone Caves of Inchnadamph.

The caves are situated on a limestone cliff and contain a range of fossils dating back several thousand years, including those belonging to polar bears, reindeer and lynx. It’s a great day out for anyone wanting to get a glimpse into some of Scotland’s ancient natural history.

In addition to the fascinating fossils, the hike to the Bone Caves offers some breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The trail is not too difficult, but it does include some rocky terrain – so make sure you pack some suitable footwear and clothing.

Find out more at: https://hiddenscotland.co/listings/bone-caves-at-inchnadamph/

Fort George

Built following the Battle of Culloden, Fort George is one of Europe’s most impressive military forts and another place to add to your itinerary if you’re a history fan.

Visitors can explore the fort’s extensive ramparts, which offer stunning views over the Moray Firth and the surrounding countryside.

The barracks are open to visitors and provide a fascinating insight into what life would have been like for soldiers stationed at Fort George in the 18th century. The fort also boasts an impressive collection of historical weaponry, which includes muskets, pikes and swords.

Find out more at: https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/fort-george/

Balnakeil Craft Village

If you’re interested in the creative culture of the Highlands, Balnakeil Craft Village is an absolute must-visit.

Located just a short drive from our luxury Highland cottages, this unique village is home to a wide range of talented and unique painters, potters, jewellers and chocolatiers. There’s even a workshop that specialises in making everyday items and ornaments out of recycled fishing rope, nets and plastic found on Balnakeil Beach.

As you wander through the picturesque village, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the workshops and maybe even pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir to remember your Highlands holiday.

Find out more at: https://balnakeilcraftvillage.weebly.com/artists–businesses.html

Dornoch Cathedral

This stunning 13th-century cathedral is only 20 minute drive away from our luxury Highland cottages, and it’s truly one of the most beautiful and historic pieces of architecture in the local area.

It’s difficult not to be in awe of the stonework and stained-glass windows – and don’t forget to take a stroll through the tranquil churchyard and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of this historic site.

If you visit during the summer months, volunteers are on hand to answer any questions you might have about the cathedral and the surrounding area. But don’t worry if you visit outside of peak season, printed information is still available throughout the year.

Find out more: https://www.dornoch-cathedral.com/

Castle Leod

Clan Mackenzie is one of the most well-known and historically significant Scottish clans. They have played a significant role in Scottish politics and society for centuries.

Castle Leod has been home to the Mackenzie clan for generations and has a history dating back to the 12th century. For fans of popular culture, the castle is also widely regarded as the inspiration behind Castle Leoch in the Outlander series of books by Diana Gabaldon.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience while you’re on your Highlands holiday, consider a trip to this historic castle.

But as a word of warning – it’s something you’ll need to plan in advance as Castle Leod is only open to the public on a certain number of days each month.

Find out more at: https://www.castleleod.org.uk/visit/

Tarbat Discovery Centre

The Tarbat Discovery Centre is a great place to visit if you’re interested in finding out more about Pictish history.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Picts, they were an ancient group of people who lived in Scotland prior to the Viking era.

The Tarbat Discovery Centre offers a variety of exhibits and displays that showcase the art, culture, and daily life of the Picts based on artefacts that have been excavated over the years.

There’s also a great audio-visual experience that shows visitors what life in Tarbat would have been like during mediaeval times. For the kids, there are a range of hands-on activities that really help bring things to life.

Children under the age of 13 can visit the Tarbat Discovery Centre for free, and adult admission is only £5, making it an affordable day out during your Highlands holiday.

Find out more at: https://www.tarbat-discovery.co.uk/

Savour a dram at a local distillery.

No trip to the Highlands would be complete without sampling some of Scotland’s finest whiskies.

Luckily, there are three excellent distilleries within a short driving distance of our Highland holiday cottages.

The famous Glenmorangie distillery is only a 30-minute drive away and offers a range of guided tours starting from only £20 per person.

The Clynelish distillery, known as the Highland home of Johnnie Walker, is also only a 30-minute drive away from our holiday lodges and has tours ranging between £19 – £65 per person.

And the Balblair distillery is just 35 minutes away by car, offering tours starting from £20 per person.

Finding dog-friendly lodges in Scotland can be a bit tricky at times. Let’s face it; our four-legged friends are part of the family, so why would we want to leave them at home while we go on our annual getaway?

For those who want to take pets along on our travels, there are many dog-friendly lodges in Scotland you can choose from. Start looking forward to long walks across the pristine Scottish Highlands during the day and then retreating to a range of dog-friendly cottages in Scotland with hot tubs to put your feet up and unwind in the evening.

A holiday exploring the Scottish Highlands is the perfect relaxing break for the whole family. At Highland Luxury Cottages, we have three luxury dog-friendly cottages that offer panoramic views of uninterrupted Scottish scenery.

Just because we love our pets doesn’t always mean they are the easiest to travel with; however, from our experience, there are a few simple tips that you can follow to ensure your holiday is stress-free and as relaxing as possible – for you and your pet.

Here are our tips for having the best dog-friendly holidays in Scotland.

Check that your holiday cottage is dog-friendly

Before even booking your holiday, you should first research that the cottages you’re looking at are dog friendly.

Most dog-friendly cottages in Scotland will clarify on their website if dogs are allowed. If you can’t find any information, we’d suggest contacting the host to double-check before making a booking.

Many holiday cottages may also have rules on the number of dogs you can bring or restrictions on where dogs are allowed, so make sure to read all information before planning your travels.

Be prepared for long car journeys.

Suppose you’re travelling to pet-friendly holiday cottages in Scotland. In that case, chances are you’ll have a pretty long car journey to get to your beautiful location, which won’t be a delightful experience for your dog.

Take regular breaks throughout your trip so your dog can stretch their legs, go to the toilet, and relax after being confined in the car for long periods.

You should also bring some water and a few treats for them along the way to keep them feeling as comfortable as possible.

Bring their favourite treats and toys.

To keep your dog in a good mood throughout the holiday, don’t forget to bring some of their favourite treats and toys along with you.

Being in a new environment can be stressful for dogs, especially if this is the first time you’re taking them away with you.

Bringing a range of toys to keep them distracted and occupied while they’re settling in can make a huge difference.

Make your holiday cottage as homely as possible.

It would help if you tried to make your dog-friendly holidays in Scotland like a home-away-from-home for your pet.

Especially when your pet first arrives at the lodge, they may feel unsettled and restless, so it’s a good idea to bring as many home comforts as possible.

Bring along their bed, blankets and other familiar items that will help them feel right at home in their new surroundings.

The last thing that we would want our dogs to feel is unhappy and worrying, especially when being on holiday and exploring a new area should be such an exciting experience for them!

When you first arrive at the lodge, you might want to keep them on a lead and slowly show them around the new house. You could also give them space to explore the surroundings themselves if you’d prefer.

The sooner they get used to the new surroundings, the sooner they’ll be able to settle – and so can you.

Keep to their usual routine.

Dogs are creatures of habit, so they might get stressed if their usual daily routine gets disrupted while on holiday.

Try to feed them at the same time as you usually would and stick to a regular time for walks so that they don’t get anxious.

Dog-friendly plan activities

You’d be surprised by the number of activities, excursions and pubs that aren’t dog-friendly, so make sure to do some research before you start making any serious plans.

In the Scottish Highlands, you should be able to find plenty of pubs and walking trails that accommodate our pets.

However, if you do have some plans that aren’t dog-friendly, try to stay close to the cottage and don’t leave your dog alone too long – you wouldn’t want to come back to any nasty surprises to clean up.

There’s always the option to find a local dog sitter, but this would have to be organised in advance.

Best Dog-Friendly Lodges In Scotland

There’s no better place to go for long walks in the countryside than the Scottish Highlands, and most of these walks are perfect for bringing your dogs along.

Some of the closest walks to our Highland Luxury Cottages accommodation are Big Burn Golspie, Littleferry, Loch Fleet and Balblair Wood, Ben Bhraggie Golspie, and the Ord at Lairg. You can also find many other walking trails around the area on Walk Highlands.

Dunrobin Castle is another popular attraction in the area. Although dogs aren’t allowed in the formal gardens, you can still take them to explore the surrounding woodlands, making for a peaceful day out.

Our final recommendation is to visit Lochinver, a small fishing village where you can find small, independent shops – including the famous pie shop, Lochinver Larder. It’s a beautiful area to take a stroll through, and there are several stunning beaches just along the coast road that we think your dog will have lots of fun running around.

Book your dog-friendly holiday with Highland Luxury Cottages

If you – and your dog – are interested in holidaying in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, get in touch with us today and see if any of our cottages are available when you plan to visit.

Rogart is a lovely crofting community that is situated only four miles from the NC500. The parish of Rogart was created in the first half of the 1200s when the 1st Earl of Sutherland was created by Alexander ll.

Over the years, the main clans residing in the area have been the Murrays, the MacKays, the Mathesons and the Sutherlands, although it has to be said, at times, not very peacefully.

Nowadays, visitors can enjoy the rich tapestry of differing scenery that the area has to offer. The lowland areas are home to luscious green farmland where the River Fleet flows through. As the land rises it changes from farmland to fields that are grazed by Highland cows and sheep. Higher still, on the slopes and hills, which are home to the hill crofts, the meadows and fields are replaced by moorland and heather.

If you fancy a spot of fishing, then day permits can be obtained for sea trout and salmon on the River Fleet. You can also buy permits for brown trout fishing. For more information about permits, please visit or pop into the local post office in the Spar shop in Pittentrail village.

Pittentrail is the main village which is located on the A839 which connects The Mound on the A9 through to Lairg. It boasts a local Spar shop, which has a post office inside it, and a filling station. It’s also a good starting point for the various walks, details of which can be found next to the parking area and picnic bench located to the left as you make your way to the railway station.

Another attraction in Rogart is the wild goats which roam freely from the high crags to the main road to graze, and they are a truly lovely sight, especially the billy goats with their amazing horns. Their official breed is British Primitive Goats.

Now, there is a legend connected with the goats. Apparently, if the goats in Rogart die, then the sea will break through the causeway at The Mound and flood all the way back to Morvich. Hence the goats are given more protection through warning signs of wild goats on the road. Just in case the legend is true!

Highland Luxury Cottages can be found in the heart of Rogart and offers some amazing views over its 300-acre working croft. It makes for a stunning area that can be explored by foot, car or bike. There is so much to find from archaeology to history and wildlife. Then, at the end of the day, you can curl up in front of a log fire or relax in a hot tub at one of Highland Luxury Cottages lodges or cottages.

You will find a warm Highland welcome in Rogart. See you soon!
